Hearing Loss: Audiology and Hearing Test

As one of the five senses, hearing is an important aspect of a person’s day-to-day life. It helps you become more aware of your surroundings, communicate with people, and overall stay connected with the world. Thus, it should not come as a surprise if your doctor suggests getting a Hearing Test periodically to ensure that your hearing function is up to par. These tests are essentially performed to check if your ears are working well or if there are issues that need to be addressed.

If you are experiencing hearing loss or similar problems, you must find a doctor specialising in Audiology to examine your condition. Hearing loss may occur as a result of aging, but in some cases, it may also be caused by other factors. Similar to how people do not often realize that they have bad vision, many also do not realize that they may have issues with hearing. As a result, it is important to get tested regularly, regardless of whether you experience any problems or not.

At Narooma Medical Centre, we have a team of qualified doctors and medical experts who can help you. To book an appointment, call us on 02 4476 5588,0424 204 562.

Hearing Test Procedure

An audiologist will often start by checking your ears for potential blockages, like ear wax, that can affect your hearing. This is then followed by a general consultation where your doctor asks about your hearing--whether your family has a history of hearing problems, whether you have noticed any issues lately, and the like. Once the consultation is settled, the actual Hearing Test can then begin. Most of the time, doctors will perform an Audiogram to test your hearing. You will be asked to wear earphones or headphones to listen to a series of sounds at different pitches, tones, and volumes. How your left and right ear responds to the sounds will help your doctor determine whether you have difficulty hearing in a specific ear or at certain volumes. Aside from this, you may also go through a speech test, where you listen to a person speaking and repeat the words that you hear. After the Hearing Test is completed, your doctor will go through the results with you to explain your condition and management strategies to keep your ears functioning properly. Should there be any problems spotted in the test, you can then discuss treatment options.

Treatment Options

here are various approaches to treating Hearing Loss as it depends on the extent of the damage. One of the most common reversible causes that people may not realize is ear wax blockage, which can lead to temporary hearing loss. For cases where the damage is on the inner ear, we can help you find a hearing aid with the proper fit and features to amplify sounds and allow you to hear better. In some cases, surgery may be a viable option, particularly if there are problems with your eardrum or bone.
